Burchell's Zebra
Description and Identification:
Schoulder height : Males and Females 1,35 m
Body mass: Males 315kg -350 kg
Females 300kg -320 kg
- Broad body stripes
- Most have yellowish or grayish shadow stripes on the white between black stripes of the rump
- They have no dewlap
- Black body stripes on the flanks continue onto the underparts
- Well- developed black mane extending from the head onto the top of the shoulders
- Whisks of long black hair on the end of the tail
- Pattern diminishes towards hooves
- Hooves are broad
Social Behavior :
- Zebra family groups – stallion , mares and offspring
- When moving stallion takes up position at rear of group
- Zebra when attacked –stallion and mares will defend by kicking and biting – excited barks
- Family groups often join to form big herds
- Nomadic in their range
- Zebra one foal
- When disturbed mare and foal take the lead
